This qualification will allow you to teach as an Aerobics Instructor.  On this 6 day course, you will learn skills in planning, instructing and evaluation of a safe and effective exercise to music class, how to adapt exercise to suit varied fitness levels and how to use a range of teaching skills gaining an understanding of the body’s systems and its responses to exercise.

You will learn to prescribe, plan and deliver safe and effective group exercise classes within a gym or health club environment. This is the ideal qualification is for someone with a keen interest in fitness and exercise wishing to start a career within the fitness industry as an Aerobics Instructor.

The qualification is broken down into 6 modules:

  • Anatomy and Physiology for Exercise

  • Health, Safety and Welfare in a Fitness Environment

  • Principles of Fitness, Exercise and Health

  • Know How to Support Clients who Take Part in Exercise and Physical Activity

  • Level 2 Planning Exercise to Music

  • Level 2 Instructing Exercise to Music

Before the course begins, students are required to follow a 6 week distance learning programme for the Anatomy and Physiology and Principles of Fitness, Exercise and Health Modules.  The practical course is taught over 6 days with an additional 1 day for assessment.

This qualification is needed to gain entry onto Level 3 qualifications such as CYQ Level 3 Certificate in Exercise to Music or Ante and Postnatal Exercise.

How will I be assessed?

Both the Anatomy and Physiology and Principles of Fitness, Exercise and Health modules are assessed by an externally set multiple choice paper each consisting of 40 questions each, with a minimum mark of 28/40 to pass.  This will be taken on the first day of the practical course. 

The Health, Safety and Welfare in a Fitness Environment and Know How to Support Clients who Take Part in Exercise and Physical Activity modules are assessed by successful completion of Work Sheets.

Assessment of the two Exercise to Music modules are carried out in 4 Elements:

Element  1       Continual Assessment (direct observation) during the practical course

Element 2        Session Planning

Element 3        Summative Practical Session (direct observation)

Element 4        Reflecting on Exercise to Music (self-evaluation)

Entry requirements are:

Some experience of group exercise to music is highly recommended.

The course requires physical exertion and individual participation is essential, therefore a degree of physical fitness is necessary.

There is an element of communication (discussing, presenting, reading and writing) involved, and candidates should have basic skills in communication pitched at Levels 2. There is also an element of learning online involving the use of a PC and the Internet; therefore you should have a good understanding of Information, and Communication Technology.

Whether you are new to working within the fitness industry or looking to further the skills you can offer, this qualification will open up more opportunities to other routes of instructing such as circuit training, step exercise to music or studio resistance training amongst others.
